Basically it’s about:
A botanist before he was a doctor, Andrew Weil thinks a lot about plants and the nature of nature when he considers human health. Drawn from his popular book of the same name, this 82-minute lecture (given at the New York Botanical Garden) touches on diet fads, the carbs vs. protein controversy, vitamin supplements, and fast food. Much of his advice is common sense: Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, don’t fall for extreme diets, pay attention to the kind of fats you eat, and increase your activity. But he complements these well-known principles with studies and examples, delivered in an entertaining way. The Australian study on fast-food fat he cites will send you speeding away from the local drive-through window, and the cultural observations he shares about the Japanese and French diets may convince you to finally try soy and eat smaller portions less frequntly. Much of his advice is boiled down in concise screen graphics for easy note-taking. The only annoying thing about this tape is the frequnt interruption by applause. Weil’s delivery is charismatic without the distracting bursts of clapping to tell us so. –Kimberly Heinrichs

OK. If you like Cary Grant, you’re going to love this movie. I’ve been a fan for a long time, and I’ve seen Father Goose a lot. I never get tired of it. Have you seen it? If you click the image above you can learn how you can watch it now, or any time.

Cary Grant’s penultimate feature before retirement was this cheerful 1964 effort to overturn his career-long image of urbane sophistication. As the unshaven, messy misanthrope Walter Eckland, a World War II-era beach bum who monitors Japanese air activity for the Australian navy in exchange for booze, Grant makes a convincingly hard-bitten, hard-drinking antihero. Until, that is, a pretty French schoolmistress (Leslie Caron) and her seven little charges (all girls) survive a nearby plane crash and invade Eckland’s raunchy isolation. Directed by 1960s hit-maker Ralph Nelson (The Lilies of the Field, Charly), Father Goose is a glossy comedy that also does justice to its more suspenseful scenes (a deadly snakebite suffered by Caron’s character is especially memorable) and leaves plenty of room for Grant to indulge in some entertaining if atypical screen behavior. All in all, this is a minor treat in the actor’s magnificent filmography. –Tom Keogh

In his direction of The Hurricane, veteran filmmaker Norman Jewison understands that slavish loyalty to factual detail is no guarantee of compelling screen biography. In telling the story of boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter–who was wrongly convicted of murder in 1967 and spent nearly two decades in jail–Jewison and his screenwriters compress time, combine characters, and rearrange events with a nonchalance that would be galling if they didn’t remain honest to the core truth of Carter’s ordeal. Because of that emotional integrity–and because Denzel Washington brings total conviction to his title role–The Hurricane rises above the confines of biographical fidelity to embrace higher valus of courage, compassion, and ultimate justice.

Jewison is woefully heavy-handed in his treatment of the fictionalized, absurdly villainous detective (Dan Hedaya) who zealously plots to keep Carter in jail, and anyone familiar with Carter’s story may object to the film’s simplified account. But what matters here is the shining star of hope that is Lesra (Vicellous Reon Shannon), the Brooklyn teenager who rejuvenates Carter’s legal battle in the early 1980s. This surrogate father-son relationship is what revives Carter’s hope for family and future, and makes The Hurricane so engrossing and emotionally effective. Lesra’s real-life Canadian mentors are compressed from nine characters to three, but their efforts are superbly dramatized, and Jewison hits the small but important grace notes that make a good film even better. By its final scenes, The Hurricane conveys the rich, rewarding satisfaction of surviving a difficult but valuable journey of mind, body, and soul. –Jeff Shannon

“There is something going on in the organization that is very undesirable and might lead to serious consequnces,” reads a note that the ill-fated Victor Dean wrote to his superior just before he took a fatal fall down the metal staircase at Pym’s Publicity Ltd. These darned suspicious circumstances lead Pym to hire Lord Peter Wimsey to determine whether Dean’s death was an accident or murder or eh, what? Ian Carmichael returns in his signature role as Dorothy L. Sayers’s aristocratic sleuth in this characteristically impeccable 1973 BBC miniseries. The chaotic advertising agency is a ripe setting for intrigu (Sayers herself worked in a prominent London ad agency in the 1920s). Wimsey has a high time masqurading incognito as the firm’s new copywriter, as well as the mysterious costumed Harlequin, a ruse he adopts to obtain information from the notorious socialite Dian de Momerie (Bridget Armstrong), whose lovers (Dean, among them) all come to bad ends, and whose den of iniquity is fronted by Major Milligan (Peter Bowles, of To the Manor Born), a drug dealer who corrupts bright young things.

Among the pleasures of a Wimsey mystery is his panache with the niceties of our English tongu. At one point he observes, “Truth in advertising is like lemon in three measures of meal. It produces a suitable quantity of gas with which to blow out a mass of crude misrepresentations into a format the public can swallow.” Let’s see Nick Charles or Columbo wrap his tongu around that one. –Donald Liebenson
